Google Expands News Innovation Challenge To Turkey, Africa, Middle East

American multinational technology company Google said on Tuesday it would launch its news initiative innovation challenge in Turkey, Africa, and the Middle East in June.

Google announced the Google News Initiative (GNI) last year as an effort to help news players in their transition to a digital future. The company is inviting proposals for projects from news organisations.

A panel will evaluate submissions from traditional publishers, news startups and associations that aim to build innovative digital media projects, and fund selected projects up to $150,000.

“News publishers in many parts of the world are grappling with questions of how quality journalism can thrive in the digital age,” director of news ecosystem development at Google, Madhav Chinnappa said.

“With economic models changing and new ways in which people are consuming news, innovation in the news industry has never been more important.”

The GNI focuses on elevating and strengthening quality journalism, evolving business models to drive sustainable growth and empowering news organizations through technological innovation.

Over the last two years, Google has trained more than 4,000 journalists across Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.
